Dr. Offenbacher received his bachelor’s degree in chemistry from Boston University, and his DDS and PhD in Biochemistry from Virginia Commonwealth University. He completed a post doctorate fellowship in pharmacology, at Forsyth Institute, as well as a certificate in periodontology and oral medicine from Harvard.
Dr. Offenbacher was named the 2015 winner of the Gold Medal Award for Excellence in Dental Research by the American Dental Association. He also received the Norton Ross Award for Clinical Research, the Gies Award and the Basic Research in Periodontal Disease Award from the International Association for Dental Research. He is past president of the American Association of Dental Research.
Dr. Offenbacher has conducted epidemiological and clinical research investigating the role of periodontal infections in systemic diseases. Currently, his research laboratory is actively exploring the cellular and molecular mechanisms of periodontal disease pathogensis from an “omics” perspective.
